Ice climbing clinic registration is now open, Friday and Saturday clinics are full, space available for Sunday clinics

List your top three preferences for clinics you would like to attend, we will do our best to place everyone. You will receive a confirmation notice shortly after you register.
Please remember to show up a least 30 minutes early for the clinics and 60 minutes early for the clinics if you need to be outfitted. Dress warm and bring a harness and a helmet if you have them.
Ice Festival clinics are organized by the Minnesota Climber Association(MCA). Clinics are free, but we are asking everyone to support the MCA by becoming a member or by making a small donation.

Intro to Ice Climbing
Intro to equipment, clothing, keeping warm tips, crampon fundamentals (French technique-ascending and descending, front pointing, flat-footing, kicking and stepping), swing and hooking the tools, where to swing the tool/reading ice, removing tools, testing placement, planning the line, the climbing “flow,” resting, pulling bulges, down-climbing

Intro to Mixed Rock and Ice  Climbing
Hooking on sills, turning pick sideways on features, Brew-meisters, pick jamming and torquing, laybacks off features, switching to rock climbing and back, matching tools (leashless)

Intermediate and Advanced Technique
Monkey-hanging, back-stepping, stemming, high stepping, reaching and stepping through, staggering placements, matching tools (leashless), pacing, traversing, efficiency, cauliflowers and chandelier ice, rotten ice, pillars, hanging pillars and curtains, thin ice.

Women’s Ice Climbing Clinic
Women's clinic covers a diverse array of techniques, approaches and styles from beginner to advanced, depending on the needs of the attendees. There is no prerequisite for experience, and all levels of expertise are welcome.

*Clinic participants should come dressed for the cold weather and are required to bring their own harness, boots, and helmet. There will be a limited supply of demo gear available, please show up an hour early for clinics if you need demo equipment.
